Headshots, profile photos and ID pictures
Profile photos
LinkedIn recommends a profile photo of 400 × 400 px, and most other platforms crop to a square or a circle too. Crop so the face takes up around 60% of the frame, then pick a background: a neutral light grey or soft blue reads as professional, and a brand colour works well for team pages where everyone should match. Use the same colour for every person and the page looks like one photo shoot, even if the originals were taken in different offices.
ID and passport photos: read this first
Many passport authorities do not accept digitally altered photos, and replacing the background can count as an alteration. The US State Department, for example, rejects photos that have been edited. Check the rules of the office you are applying to before you use an edited photo. Where a plain background is all that matters, these are the colours commonly required:

Visa and ID card rules differ from passports, and all of them change - the issuing office’s own page is the source to trust.
Why the photo you start with matters most
- Hair against a similar colour (dark hair on a dark wall) is the hardest case for any automatic tool. Contrast helps more than any setting.
- Soft, even light keeps the edge clean. A strong backlight creates a bright rim that can stay on the cut-out.
- Higher resolution keeps more hair detail. A cropped, compressed screenshot loses the fine strands before the model sees them.

From experience
Getting clean edges on people
- Hair is where every background remover struggles. Use the High precision model and a portrait with clear contrast between hair and background.
- Frizzy or wind-blown hair against a busy background is the worst case - a plainer backdrop in the original photo gives a far cleaner cut.
- When you need an exact background colour, cut out to transparent first, then pick Colour and type the value - it beats removing straight to white.
- Glasses and earrings can confuse the cut-out; zoom in after processing to check those edges.
