Which image formats keep transparency
Transparency lives in an alpha channel: a fourth value per pixel, next to red, green and blue, that says how see-through the pixel is. A format either stores that channel or it does not, and no export setting changes that.

How to check a PNG is really transparent
Many “transparent PNG” downloads from image searches are fakes: the grey-and-white checkerboard is painted into the pixels. To test a file, place it on a dark slide or page. A real transparent PNG shows the dark colour through; a fake shows the checkerboard. In this tool, pick Colour after the cut-out and choose something dark - edges and halos show up the same way.
Keep the transparent master
Treat the transparent PNG as the master copy and export flattened versions from it - a white JPG for a marketplace, a coloured one for a thumbnail. Going the other way does not work: once a background is flattened into a JPG, getting the alpha back means removing the background again. From experience
Why PNG, and what to watch for
- Only PNG, WebP and AVIF keep transparency. If you export to JPG, the transparent areas fill with white - that is a JPG limitation, not the tool.
- Check the result on both a light and a dark background; faint halo edges only show up against one of them.
- Semi-transparent areas like glass or smoke get a partial alpha, which is correct - they should not be fully opaque.
- For crisp icons and line art, the High precision model avoids the soft, feathered edge the Fast model leaves.
